Bedroom Conversion
The client’s instruction for this bedroom in a large Georgian
property in London was pretty open. They required the room to be
redecorated and the construction of a new walk-in cupboard to one
side of the chimney breast and a lower cupboard and shelving to the
other. A new hardwood floor was required as well as quality, lined,
blackout curtains for warmth and to eliminate harsh street lighting.
We also noticed some water damage to the ceiling and walls, which
had to be corrected. We sealed this first and then made repairs to
the lathe and plaster ceiling. We chose a colour scheme that was
both sympathetic to the nature of the building whilst being
practical for its use as a young man’s bedroom. Likewise we
exchanged the lighting for something more practical giving a
stronger light as the room is very large; the room measures 4.5M
(15’) x 5.5M (18’) and is 3M (10’) high. We countered this however
by adding a dimmer switch.
Once we had chosen the overall colour scheme we brought in our
curtain specialist, Karen from Traditional Interiors, to go
through the various options and colours here. A gold, fully lined,
pleated curtain and pelmet was set off with a half-window voile
[net] to add that final touch of class and provide just a little
more privacy.
We felt very much that the construction of the new cupboards and
shelving should be in timber rather than MDF to protect the
integrity of the building whilst a gloss finish would provide a
clean, fresh aspect. Both cupboards were to come flush with the
chimney breast. The chimney breast itself would look very plain on
a large expanse of wall, so we added a fire surround in a white
finish to just break the area up a little and add character to the
room.
The walls were completely stripped of paper,
filled and sanded and the new emulsion in ivory colour applied
straight on to the walls. The radiator was painted in the same
ivory colour but in a high gloss to ‘lose’ it. We did not want to
paint this white and make it a feature.
Martin from The Solid Wood Flooring Co.
put the solid oak floor straight onto the original floorboards using
secret nails. This added the final touch to the room giving a very
warm and practical solution to the bedroom flooring.
